BitDefender Total Security 2012
BitDefender Total Security has shown in tests, conducted by several magazines, that it offers a very good virus recognition rate. It is a bit behind the pack as far as Spyware recognition is concerned. A reliable firewall and timely updates make this software a standout. With its new B-HAVE technology, that recognizes new threats for which there are no signatures yet, BitDefender seems to have made steps into the right direction in respect to virus defense.
WLAN network monitoring and instant messaging encryption (MSN and Yahoo) rounds out this security package quite nicely.
Unfortunately, the boot process becomes quite dragged out (about 1 minute longer) in comparison with other total security packages. In addition, it is only possible to secure data via data storage. Online backup would be a desired future feature.
A point in favor of BitDefender software is the, so called, laptop mode which preserves battery power. As soon as the device runs on battery power laptop mode automatically turns on. Scans, backups and similar processes are then postponed until the device runs on electrical power again, without losing real time protection.
Operation of this software is not exactly easy or intuitive. The Anti-Virus engine has pre-defined security levels which can be selected by the user. Advanced users can change many of the standard configurations as needed.
